Welcome and General Information 2017

We look forward to welcoming new and past delegates to this year's meeting being held at another new venue for the first time - Cheltenham Racecourse.

Cheltenham is famous for its Regency architecture and is said to be "the most complete regency town in England".  The town is also famous for being the home of National Hunt Racing and hosts the 'Gold Cup' during it's Festival week in March every year, it is also home to GCHQ the Government's electronic surveillance operation.

Cheltenham was described in the New York Times in January 2016 as a town enjoying a cultural renaissance with many "happening spots", and featured in the Independent in November as a "Design Destination" with stylish places to eat, drink and stay.

Cheltenham was specifically designed in its 18th and 19th century heyday as a pleasure health resort for wealthy visitors, hence why it is often referred to  as Cheltenham Spa.  The legacy today leaves an exceptional range of quality accommodation, restaurants and entertainment in an elegant town, where many of the regency, architectural and heritage features can still be seen today, with the town maintaining much of its original culture.

However, recent modern redevelopments see a new generation of visitors to Cheltenham.   The Brewery Quarter is a buzzing district where old meets new and is home to branded stores, bars offering live gigs and entertainment throughout the week.  Cheltenham is also known for its excellent High Street shops and independent shopping quarters such as Montpellier and The Suffolks, and in 2017 John Lewis will open a flagship store in the former Beechwood Shopping Centre. 

Travel

Road - Cheltenham is adjacent to the M5 motorway (between Bristol and Birmingham) and its junction with the A417 to Swindon, and the A40 runs from across the M5 through the town towards Oxford and London.

Rail - Cheltenham Spa railway station is located on the Bristol-Birmingham main line, with services to Gloucester, Bristol, Swindon, London Paddington, Cardiff Central, Bridgend, Maesteg, Plymouth and the South West, Birmingham, Derby, the North West, the North East and Scotland.

Bus - National Express operate a number of coach services from Cheltenham including route 444 to London and route 222 to Heathrow and Gatwick airports.
